The Tuesday after my partner’s funeral, I sat in our living room staring out the window. I asked Jeff for a sign—something to let me know he was still there with me. As the sun began to set, two bursts of light broke through the dark clouds. It was breathtaking, and in my heart, I knew it was him reaching out to me. For a moment, I imagined that instead of sitting alone in our living room, Jeff and I were together again, somewhere on a beach, watching the sunset side by side.
I cried as the light slowly faded into darkness. I’m not sure how much time passed before I realized I was sitting in a completely dark room.
It took me a while to begin painting again. A couple of weeks after Jeff passed, I set up a blank canvas, but I couldn’t bring myself to take the next step. Two months later, I finally sat down in front of it and began painting the sky I had seen that Tuesday evening.
I cried for the first fifteen minutes, but I kept going. Eventually, the paintbrush took over, and I became lost in the painting. Instead of painting the reality of that evening, I painted the daydream—the two of us together again, beneath that sky.
Perhaps it helped a little. I’m still not sure.
Very little makes sense to me right now, but Jeff and I always believed in the healing power of art and music. I am an artist, and he was an incredibly talented musician. That shared love of creating was one of the many reasons we fell in love.
I have to believe that if I keep going—if I keep painting and creating—somewhere along this terribly difficult road, I will find light again.
To my Jeffrey: I love you. I miss you every moment of every day, and I will find you again.
And to anyone who has experienced a heartbreaking loss of their own, I hope In a Daydream offers a small place of comfort—a reminder that even in our darkest moments, love has a way of finding its way back to us.

About the artist
I create art because I believe it has the power to heal. Through seasons of profound loss, change, solitude, and personal growth, I discovered that peaceful places — both real and imagined — can offer comfort when words cannot.
