I asked Jeff for a sign—something to let me know he was still there with me.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs the sun began to set, two bursts of light broke through the dark clouds. It was breathtaking, and in my heart, I knew it was him reaching out to me. For a moment, I imagined that instead of sitting alone in our living room, Jeff and I were together again, somewhere on a beach, watching the sunset side by side.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI cried as the light slowly faded into darkness. I’m not sure how much time passed before I realized I was sitting in a completely dark room.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt took me a while to begin painting again. A couple of weeks after Jeff passed, I set up a blank canvas, but I couldn’t bring myself to take the next step. Two months later, I finally sat down in front of it and began painting the sky I had seen that Tuesday evening.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI cried for the first fifteen minutes, but I kept going. Eventually, the paintbrush took over, and I became lost in the painting. Instead of painting the reality of that evening, I painted the daydream—the two of us together again, beneath that sky.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePerhaps it helped a little. I’m still not sure.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eVery little makes sense to me right now, but Jeff and I always believed in the healing power of art and music. I am an artist, and he was an incredibly talented musician. That shared love of creating was one of the many reasons we fell in love.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI have to believe that if I keep going—if I keep painting and creating—somewhere along this terribly difficult road, I will find light again.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTo my Jeffrey: I love you.
